Where the Church Drifted

A simple test: when did the church start believing it?

There is a fair, simple test for any teaching, and the Bible itself invites it: when did the church start believing this? Jude says to "earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints," and Jeremiah says, "ask for the old paths." New is not automatically wrong; doctrine does mature. But a teaching the church had never heard until the 1500s, or the 1830s, or that survives only as a modern slogan, has some explaining to do. These letters apply that test, to the big systems and to the everyday sayings alike, and trace where the modern church has wandered from the older reading.

Two kinds of drift show up here. There is the large-scale drift, whole systems the early church never held, measured against the faith of the first centuries and even against the Reformation's own confessions. And there is the everyday drift, familiar teachings flattened into half-truths: communion reduced to a bare memory, prayer treated as pointless, "wine" explained away, "judge not" turned into a thought-stopping slogan. In each case the cure is the same, read the text again, in the company of the church that first received it.

The big systems — frameworks the early church never held

Did the Church Get It Wrong for 1,800 Years? The test itself: when did a doctrine start? Each system runs deeper than one letter. The end-times drift unfolds across Dispensationalism, Tested by the Text, the Rapture, a Third Temple?, the Antichrist, and covenant theology. The grace and salvation drift unfolds across the security of salvation, Lord, or just Savior?, and hyper-grace.

The everyday teachings — slogans flattened into half-truths

The Lord's Table Is communion only a memorial? The New Testament and the whole early church treat the Table as a real feeding on Christ, part of abiding in the vine. Where this lands

The standard is "the faith once delivered." The closer a teaching sits to what the martyrs died for and the global church has always confessed, the more weight it carries; the newer and more local it is, or the more it depends on a slogan that collapses under the whole text, the more it has to prove. None of this is a private system invented to win arguments. It is the report of what was believed, set beside the words of Jesus and the prophets, so that anyone can see how far a teaching has drifted, and find the way back.
