Chapter 2: The Second Class: the Our Father and the Hail Mary

Our translation, from the Italian of the Opera Omnia (Paris: Vivès, 1870–74), vol. XII, Dottrina Cristiana Breve, composed by order of Pope Clement VIII. Second class: Explanation of the Our Father and the Hail Mary

M. Having now spoken of what must be believed, let us see whether you know what must be hoped for, and from whom it must be hoped. Do you know the Our Father?

D. I know it very well, for it is the first thing I learned, and I say it every morning and every evening, together with the Hail Mary and the Creed.

M. Say the Our Father, then.

D. Our Father, who art in heaven,
1. Hallowed be thy name.
2. Thy kingdom come.
3. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
4. Give us this day our daily bread.
5. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
6. And lead us not into temptation.
7. But deliver us from evil. Amen.

M. Who composed this prayer?

D. Christ our Lord composed it; therefore it is the most excellent of all prayers.

M. What does this prayer contain in sum?

D. All that can be asked and hoped for from God. For there are seven petitions: in the first four we ask him to give us good, in the three that follow to deliver us from evil. As for the good, we ask first the glory of God; second, our own highest good; third, grace to gain it; fourth, the means to have and keep that grace. As for the evil, we ask him to deliver us first from past evil, second from future evil, third from present evil, and so from every evil.

M. Explain the words that come before the first petition, that is, Our Father who art in heaven.

D. This is a little preface, in which the reason is given why we dare to speak with so great a Lord, and why we hope to be heard. It says, then, that God is our Father by creation and by adoption, and so we run to him as children; and it adds that he is in heaven, as Lord of the universe. And so we know that he can hear us if he wills, as we hope he wills, because he is our Father.

M. Explain the first petition.

D. In the first petition we ask that God may be known by the whole world, and so that his holy name may be honoured and glorified by all as is fitting.

M. Explain the second.

D. We ask in the second that the kingdom he has promised us may come soon: that is, that when the battles we have with the devil, the world and the flesh are ended, we may reach eternal blessedness, in which we shall reign with God without any hindrance.

M. Explain the third.

D. We ask in the third the grace of God, by which we may obey his holy commandments perfectly, as the Angels in heaven always obey him. For the ladder to climb to the kingdom of heaven is obedience to the commandments. [The print reads “la gloria di Dio”, the glory of God; the sense, and the order given above (first the glory of God, second our highest good, third grace to gain it), require grazia, grace.]

M. Explain the fourth.

D. We ask in the fourth for daily bread, both spiritual, that is, the word of God and the sacraments, and bodily, that is, food and clothing. For the word of God preached by preachers and read by us in spiritual books, and the holy sacraments, above all confession and communion, are most effective means on their side (that is, if nothing is lacking on ours) to gain and keep the grace of God, of which we spoke in the preceding petition; and food and clothing are necessary to us to keep up this life in the service of God.

M. Explain the fifth.

D. We ask in the fifth that God may deliver us from past evils, that is, from sins already committed, forgiving us the debt of guilt and of punishment that we have contracted by them. And it adds, as we forgive our debtors, that is, as we pardon the offences of our enemies. For it is not reasonable that God should forgive us our sins, which are very great offences, if we will not forgive the injuries done to us, which are offences of little weight.

M. Explain the sixth.

D. We ask in the sixth that God may deliver us from temptations, which are future evils, either by not permitting us to be tempted, or by giving us grace not to be overcome.

M. Explain the seventh.

D. We ask in the seventh that he may deliver us from present evil, that is, from every affliction and misery, and also from every vain prosperity and worldly greatness, if he sees that it would harm the salvation of the soul.

M. Now say the Hail Mary.

D. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

M. Whose are these words?

D. Some are the Archangel Gabriel's, some St. Elizabeth's, and some the Church's.

M. For what purpose do you say the Hail Mary after the Our Father?

D. So that through the intercession of the most blessed Virgin I may more easily obtain what I ask of God; for she is the advocate of sinners and full of mercy, and she also stands in heaven above all the choirs of the Angels, and is most pleasing to God.

M. Do you not also turn to the other Saints for help?

D. I turn to all the Saints, and in particular to the saint whose name I bear, and to my guardian Angel.

SECONDA CLASSE.
Dichiarazione dei Pater noster , e
dell' Ave Maria.
cosi in terra.
4. Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano.
5. Rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, siccome noi
li rimettiamo a’nostri debitori.
6.  E  non  c’indurre  in  tentazione;
7. Ma liberaci dal male. Amen.
avanti alia prima petizione, cioe, Padre no¬
adozione, e pero come figliuoli ricorriamo
Signor dell’ universo. E pero sappiamo, che
pu6 esaudire, se vuole, come speriamo che
voglia, perche egli e Padre.
M. Dichiarate la prima petizione.
D. Nella prima petizione dimandiamo
onorato e glorificato come conviene.
aggiunge siccome noi rimettiamo i debiti a’
nostri debitori cioe perdoniamo le offese a’
nostri nemici.

a nuocere alia salute dell’ anima.
M. Dite ora l’Ave Maria.
Signore e teco : tu sei benedetta fra tutte
Pater noster?
D. Acciocche per intercessione della bea¬
tissima Yergine piu facilmente impetri quello
che domando a Dio; perche ella e avvocata
de’ peccatori, e piena di misericordia, ed
insieme sta in cielo sopra tutti i cori degli
Angeli, ed b gratissima a Dio.
M. Non ricorrete voi per ajuto ancora agli
altri Santi?
custode.
