Chapter 3: The Third Class: the Commandments, the Precepts of the Church, the Sacraments

Third class: On the commandments of God

M. Let us come now to what must be done to love God and our neighbour. Say the ten commandments.

D. 1. I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt have no other God before me.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the feast days.
4. Honour thy father and thy mother.
5. Thou shalt not kill.
6. Thou shalt not commit fornication.
7. Thou shalt not steal.
8. Thou shalt not bear false witness.
9. Thou shalt not covet another's wife.
10. Thou shalt not covet another's goods.

M. Who gave these commandments?

D. God himself in the old law, and afterwards Christ our Lord confirmed them in the new.

M. What do these commandments contain in sum?

D. All that must be done to love God and our neighbour. For the first three commandments teach how we must behave toward God with the heart, the mouth and our works. The other seven teach us to do good to our neighbour, and not to harm him in his person, his honour or his goods, neither by deeds nor by words nor in the mind. And so the end of all the commandments is the commandment of charity, which commands us to love God above all things and our neighbour as ourselves.

M. Explain the first commandment.

D. In the beginning God warns us that he is our true and supreme Master, and so we are bound to obey him with all diligence. Next he commands that we must not acknowledge anyone else as God. In this the unbelievers sin, who adore creatures in place of the Creator; and also sorcerers and witches, who hold the devil for their God.

M. Explain the second.

D. The second commandment forbids blasphemies, which are very great sins; false or needless oaths; not fulfilling vows; and every other dishonour done to God with words.

M. Explain the third.

D. The third commands the keeping of feast days, which consists in abstaining from servile works, so as to have time to spend in considering the benefits of God, visiting churches, praying, reading spiritual books, hearing the divine offices and the prayers, and doing other such spiritual and holy works. [“Le preghiere”, the prayers, as printed; the fuller catechism, on this commandment, has “udir le prediche”, hearing sermons, and prediche may be meant here.]

M. Explain the fourth.

D. The fourth orders that father and mother be honoured, not only with respect in words and by taking off one's cap, but also by helping them and providing for them in their needs. And what is said of father and mother must also be kept toward our other neighbours, though the obligation is not so great as toward father and mother, who gave us our being and raised us with much labour.

M. Explain the fifth.

D. In the fifth he commands us not to kill anyone unjustly, nor do him any other harm in his person. And I say unjustly, because judges who condemn wrongdoers to death, and the officers of justice who put them to death, as also soldiers in a just war, do not sin when they wound or kill.

M. Explain the sixth.

D. The sixth commands that adultery be not committed, that is, sin with another's wife; and it is understood also that fornication, or any other carnal sin, be not committed.

M. Explain the seventh.

D. The seventh commands that no one take another's goods secretly, which is called theft, nor openly, which is called robbery; nor cheat in selling and buying and similar contracts; and lastly that he not damage his neighbour in his goods.

M. Explain the eighth.

D. In the eighth are forbidden false witness, grumbling, detraction, flattery, lying, and any other harm done to our neighbour with the tongue.

M. Explain the last two.

D. In the last two precepts God commands that no one desire another's wife or goods; because he who sees hearts wills us to be holy and clean not only outwardly but also inwardly, so that we may be wholly just.

On the precepts of the Church and on the counsels

M. Add to the commandments of God the few that holy Church has added.

D. The commandments of holy Church are six.
1. To hear Mass every Sunday and on the other feasts of obligation.
2. To fast in Lent, on the vigils of obligation and on the four Ember seasons, and not to eat meat on Friday and Saturday.
3. To go to confession at least once a year.
4. To receive communion at Easter.
5. To pay tithes.
6. Not to celebrate weddings in the forbidden seasons, that is, from the first Sunday of Advent until the Epiphany, and from the first day of Lent until the octave of Easter.

M. Besides the commandments, to which we are all bound, are there some counsels of perfection?

D. There are three counsels given by our Lord Jesus Christ to those who desire to reach perfection.

M. What are these counsels?

D. Voluntary poverty, perpetual chastity, and obedience in everything that is not sin.

On the Sacraments

M. We have now treated of all that must be believed, hoped for and done. It remains that we treat of the holy sacraments, by means of which the grace of God is gained. Say, then, how many are the sacraments?

D. They are seven. 1. Baptism. 2. Confirmation. 3. The Eucharist. 4. Penance. 5. Holy Oil. 6. Orders. 7. Matrimony.

M. Who instituted them?

D. Jesus Christ our Lord.

M. What effect does Baptism have?

D. It makes a man become a child of God and heir of Paradise; it blots out all sins and fills the soul with grace and spiritual gifts.

M. What effect does Confirmation have?

D. It strengthens a man so that he is not afraid to confess the faith of Christ our Lord, and so makes us become true soldiers of the Saviour.

M. What effect does the Eucharist have?

D. It nourishes charity, which is the life of the soul, and increases it more every day. And so it is given under the appearance of bread; though truly that is not bread, but the true body of the Lord; just as what is in the Chalice is not wine, though it seems wine, but is the true blood of the same Christ our Lord under the appearance of wine.

M. What effect does Penance have?

D. It forgives the sins committed after Baptism, and brings back to the friendship of God one who by sin had become his enemy.

M. What must one do to receive this sacrament?

D. First one must have sorrow for one's sins, with the purpose of never committing them again. Then one must confess them all to a priest approved by the superiors. And last one must do the penance the priest imposes.

M. What effect does the Holy Oil have?

D. It blots out the remains of sins, gives gladness and strength to the soul to fight with the devil in that last time, and also helps to recover the health of the body, if that is useful for the salvation of the soul. [The print reads santità, holiness; sanità, health, is plainly meant.]

M. What effect does the sacrament of Orders have?

D. It gives power and grace to priests and the other ministers of the Church to be able to do their offices well.

M. What effect does the sacrament of Matrimony have?

D. It gives strength and grace to those who are lawfully joined, to live in marriage with peace and charity, and to beget and raise children in the holy fear of God, so that they may have joy of them in this life and in the next.

comandamenti insegnano come ci abbiamo
da portare verso Dio coi cuore, colla bocca
e colle opere.
opere necon parole, ne coli’ animo, e cosiilfine

fare orazione, lejzgere libri spii ituali, udire

bene nonci e tanto obbligo quanto coi padre
E dico in¬
giustamente, perche i giudici, i quali con-
danuano i malfattori a morte, e i ministri di
giustizia, chelifanno morire; come anco i
