The Names of the Holy Spirit
The Helper has names too
The Spirit is the quietest Person of the Trinity, the one who points not to Himself but to Christ, and so His names are easy to miss. But they are there, woven through the New Testament, and each one tells you what He is doing in you right now: comforting, guiding, adopting, sealing, making alive. He is not a force or a feeling. He has a name, and He answers to it.
✦ The Words of the Spirit — not only His names but where He speaks, in His own voice →
The Comforter (Paraclete, "the Helper called alongside")
"the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things" (John 14:26). One called to your side to help, counsel, and console, sent so you would never be left alone.
The Spirit of Truth
"when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth" (John 16:13). He does not invent new truth; He leads you deeper into the truth that is Christ.
The Spirit of God & the Spirit of Christ
"the Spirit of God dwell in you… if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his" (Romans 8:9; 1 Peter 1:11). Fully God, and the very presence of Jesus in His people.
The Holy Ghost
"how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" (Luke 11:13). The Holy One, the Father's best gift, given simply for the asking.
The Spirit of Adoption
"ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15). He is the One who makes the orphan a child and teaches the heart to say Father.
The Spirit of Holiness
"declared to be the Son of God with power… according to the spirit of holiness" (Romans 1:4). The One who sets apart and makes holy what He indwells.
The Eternal Spirit
"who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God" (Hebrews 9:14). Without beginning or end, present even at the cross.
The Spirit of Grace
"done despite unto the Spirit of grace" (Hebrews 10:29). The One through whom grace reaches us, never to be treated lightly.
The Spirit of Life
"the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:2). The breath that raised Christ and raises us, freedom itself.
The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation
"the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him" (Ephesians 1:17). The One who opens the eyes of the heart to know God.
The Spirit of Glory
"the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you" (1 Peter 4:14). The weight of God's own glory, resting on the suffering and the faithful.
The Holy Spirit of Promise, the Earnest
"ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance" (Ephesians 1:13-14). The seal that marks you as God's and the down payment that guarantees all the rest is coming.
The Seven Spirits of God
"seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God" (Revelation 4:5). The sevenfold fullness of the one Spirit, complete and perfect before the throne.
