In the beginning

Genesis 1 · the creation, spoken into being

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.Genesis 1:3

To Noah

Genesis 9 · after the flood, the bow in the cloud

And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.Genesis 9:1

And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:Genesis 9:12

I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.Genesis 9:13

To Abraham

Genesis 12-15 · the call that began a people

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:Genesis 12:1

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:Genesis 12:2

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.Genesis 12:3

After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.Genesis 15:1 · the shield

The covenant sealed

Genesis 17 · I am the Almighty God; the everlasting covenant

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.Genesis 17:1 · El Shaddai

As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.Genesis 17:4

Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.Genesis 17:5 · the new name

And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.Genesis 17:7

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.Genesis 17:19 · Isaac promised

To Jacob

Genesis 28 · the ladder at Bethel

And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;Genesis 28:13

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.Genesis 28:15

The angel of the LORD

When the LORD’s own messenger speaks as God Himself — read by the early church as the Son before His coming

And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.Genesis 22:11 · on the mountain

And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.Genesis 22:12

And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:Genesis 22:16 · the oath

That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;Genesis 22:17

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.Genesis 22:18

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.Judges 6:12 · to Gideon

And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?Judges 6:14

At the burning bush

Exodus 3 · the Name revealed to Moses

And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.Exodus 3:4 · by name

And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.Exodus 3:5

Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.Exodus 3:6

And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;Exodus 3:7

Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.Exodus 3:10

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.Exodus 3:14 · the Name

At Sinai

Exodus 20 · the first words of the Ten

I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.Exodus 20:2

His mercy proclaimed

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.Exodus 34:7

To Joshua

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.Joshua 1:9

Job 38 · God answers Job

To Jonah

The voice from heaven

The Father’s own voice, heard aloud in the Gospels

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.Matthew 3:17 · at the baptism

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.Matthew 17:5 · on the mount

Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.John 12:28

The angel to Mary

Luke 1 · the great announcement

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.Luke 1:28

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.Luke 1:30

The call of the prophets

God speaks face to face to call His messengers

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.Isaiah 6:8 · “Here am I; send me”

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.Isaiah 6:9

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.Jeremiah 1:5 · known before the womb

But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.Jeremiah 1:7

Through the prophets

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.Isaiah 43:2

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:Jeremiah 31:31 · the new covenant
