Words of the Spirit

Where the Holy Spirit speaks, in His own voice

The Spirit is the quietest Person of the Trinity, and so it is easy to forget that He speaks at all. But He does, in His own voice, scattered through the New Testament: a word to a man on a desert road, a charge to a church at prayer, a warning about the latter days, and the long witness He gave through the prophets, still speaking. Here His words are gathered in one place, marked in His own blue. Where the Spirit speaks, He always points to Christ.

His warning to the church

His witness through the prophets

Hebrews · the Spirit still speaking

The writer of Hebrews does not say the Spirit spoke; he says the Spirit saith — present tense. The old words of the Psalms and the Prophets are the Holy Ghost's living voice.

Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) Hebrews 3:7-11 · the Spirit speaking Psalm 95
Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us… This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Hebrews 10:15-17 · the Spirit speaking Jeremiah 31
Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: for the heart of this people is waxed gross… lest they should… be converted, and I should heal them. Acts 28:25-27 · Paul, the Spirit speaking Isaiah 6

His voice in the Revelation

The Revelation of John
Yea, saith the Spirit, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth… that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. Revelation 14:13
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come… And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Revelation 22:17 · the Spirit's last invitation

And seven times over, sealing each letter to the seven churches, the same call: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churchesRev 2:7, 2:11, 2:17, 2:29, 3:6, 3:13, 3:22.
