The Short Version
The whole thing in about two minutes, in plain words. Everything else on this site is the long version of this page.
There is a lot on this site, and most of it argues with somebody. If you did not come here for an argument, start here instead. No names you have to look up, no vocabulary, nothing assumed.
God made you and He is not neutral about you
He is not a force or a principle. He is someone, and He is good, and love is not something He does when He is in the mood. It is what He is. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8). While we were still the problem. That is the sentence to hold onto if you only keep one.
Something is wrong, and you already know it
Not just out there, in here. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23). Everyone. That is not an insult, it is a relief, because it means you are not uniquely bad and you are not required to pretend. The wrong is real and it separates. It also cannot be fixed by trying harder, which most people have already tested personally.
God did something about it Himself
He did not send advice. He came. Jesus lived the life we could not live, died the death we had coming, and walked out of the grave three days later, which is the part everything hangs on. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16).
That is the whole transaction. There is nothing for you to add, because there is nothing left over. The bill was paid in full by someone who could afford it.
What you do with it
You receive it. That is the word Scripture uses. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:" (John 1:12).
Receiving looks like three things happening at once, and they are not steps to complete in order. You admit the truth about yourself instead of managing it. You trust Him rather than your record. And you turn, meaning you actually intend to follow Him, not just to be forgiven and carry on. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9).
And your answer is genuinely yours. He draws first, always, and nobody finds Him by accident or by being clever. But the yes is real, He does not force it, and that is why it means something to the One receiving it.
And He does not leave you to manage it. God's own Spirit comes to live in the person who receives Him, and He is the one who actually produces the change, the love, and the staying power. None of this runs on willpower.
You do not have to feel a particular way. You do not have to understand everything first. You do not have to clean up before you come, which is fortunate, because that is what He is for.
Then what
It is a relationship, not a transaction you file away. Which means it is lived. You are baptized, which is where faith goes public and is not an empty gesture. You talk to Him. You read what He said. You eat at His table with other Christians and stay with them even when they are annoying. And you keep coming back when you fail. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9). That verse is written to people who already belong to Him. Failing was expected. Staying away is the only real danger.
One more thing, because it changes how the news reads. Christ is not waiting to become King. He reigns now, and He is coming back visibly to finish what He started. Whatever the news is doing, the outcome is not in doubt.
It will cost you things, and He said so plainly rather than hiding it. It is still the best trade anyone has ever been offered.
That is it
Everything else on this site is footnotes to those five paragraphs: what the earliest Christians believed, where later teachings came from, and why some arguments are worth having. None of it is required reading, and none of it changes what is above.
If you want to go further, three places to go next.
- What I Want You to Know — the same thing, said personally and at more length.
- The Whole Story — the Bible as one story, from the garden to the city.
- The Study Bible — read it yourself, which is the point of all of this.
And if you want to know what this site holds and where it stands, that is set out in thirteen articles, each with the Scripture quoted whole: What the Word Says, and What We Believe It Means. If a word or a name anywhere here is unfamiliar, the glossary explains it in a sentence.
